The Must-Have Computer Accessories: Keyboard Mouse Combo

April 26, 2023

Computer Accessories - Modern World Technology

Computers have made a significant impact on the modern world of technology. But behind such a machine are supporting components that make up the system. Among the major parts is the input — commonly referred to as the computer accessories. In this post, we will focus on the auxiliary devices: the keyboard and mouse.

Input vs Output

The input is a major part of the computer, along with output devices. Both allow the system to function properly with external help. Although these computer accessories deal with the same data, each work differently.

The input sends information to a computer system for processing. From the user’s point of view, it allows them to communicate with the machine. These are the hardware components that you use to type with and scroll through, for the most part. In simple terms, a keyboard-mouse combo.

A keyboard lets you input texts and commands, while a mouse allows you to navigate and select options. Other input devices include scanners, webcams, microphones, and so on. It can be impossible to interact with a computer system without these tools.

The output completes the task related to the data. It displays the results of that processing, providing you with the results of your input. Some common output devices include monitors, printers, speakers, and projectors.

Monitors display visual output, and printers produce hard copies of documents, for instance. Output devices are essential in allowing you to interact with them. Plus, understand the information that you have processed on your computer.

Now that you know the differences, you can be confident when someone asks you to identify which. Let’s give it a try: identify these combo input devices – one that controls the cursor and the other with special keys. The answer?

Computer Accessories: Mouse

A mouse is a pointing and handheld device used to navigate and interact with a computer system. It moves around on a flat surface and has one or more buttons that can be pressed to perform different actions.

It allows the user to move the cursor on the screen and click on icons, buttons, and other elements on the interface. This makes it easier to navigate and interact with different applications and programs.

Overall, a mouse provides a more intuitive and efficient way to control the computer. This has greatly enhanced the user experience, making it an essential component.

How does it work?

The mouse controls the cursor in a GUI (graphical user interface) to different items on the screen. It can be placed on a mouse pad or bare desk in front of the computer – anywhere with a flat and level surface.

Moving the mouse pointer on the screen can shift and select text, icons, files, and folders. It can have 1 button, 2 or 3 buttons, or even 3 buttons and a scroll button. A standard modern design features a mouse with 2 buttons and a scroll button in the centre.

A mouse can be connected to the system unit or can be wireless.

Different types of a computer mouse

Wired and wireless are often the basis, but there are other finds on the market, such as:

  • Mechanical. The refined version of Engelbart’s original mouse. A mechanical mouse uses a metal or rubber ball that rolls in any direction as the user moves/controls it. The two rollers track the movement and convert it into a command the computer decodes.
  • Optical. An optical mouse utilises an LED sensor to detect motion. Then it sends that information to the computer to operate as per movement.
  • Wireless. As the name suggests, this type of computer mouse has no wires. RF and Bluetooth mouses fall under this category.
  • Vertical. A vertical mouse stands upright, with the primary buttons located at the sides. It resembles a shark’s fin and is suitable for people who suffer from wrist pain.
  • Stylus. A stylus mouse is similar to a pen, which artists mostly enjoy. Held using a writing position and draws on a pressure-sensitive pad.
  • Cordless 3-D. A 3D mouse can be pointed at the computer screen like a TV remote.

Computer Accessories: Keyboards

A keyboard enters data and commands into a computer system. It consists of a set of keys, each representing a specific character, number or symbol. Depending on the model, special characters like the Atl key and Windows may also be included. The case is a bit different with Mac keyboards from Apple.

Its main function is to allow users to type in the text. But it can also be used to navigate menus, select options, and execute commands. Without it, users would be unable to interact with the computer or enter data.

How does it work?

When a user presses a key on the keyboard, it generates an electrical signal. This is then sent to the computer’s processor. The processor will convert it into a character, which is displayed on the screen.

The keyboard uses a matrix of circuits to identify which key has been pressed. Each key has a unique electrical code that is sent to the processor.

Different types of keyboards

There are several different types of keyboards available for computer systems. The most common type is the traditional QWERTY, and there are also:

  • Ergonomic. This type of keyboard is designed to fit you easily and reduce strain. It often has a curved shape and a split design to promote a more natural typing position. The space bar is a lot bigger, too, enabling fast typing.
  • Flexible. A flexible keyboard is similar to a normal keyboard, except it is made of soft silicone. It connects to the computer via a USB connection serial port. The design is water and dust-resistant with minimal cleaning requirements.
  • Wireless. As the name suggests, wireless keyboards are not connected to the rest of the computer with a cable. They utilise radio-frequency (FR), infrared (IR), or Bluetooth technology to connect with devices.
  • Mechanical. This type of keyboard uses mechanical switches instead of membrane ones. Each key has its own switch underneath responsible for registering key presses. It also offers unique features such as LED backlight and switch types.
  • Gaming. Designed for gamers in mind, gaming keyboards can consist of a reduced range of keys like W, A, S, D, and the arrows instead of QWERTY. They boast a rapid response time, giving gamers the edge they need for speed.

Computer Accessories: Things to Consider

When purchasing a set, the design and where you plan to set them up must be taken into account. For the mouse, you want the unit to be clickable, easy to move, and the cursor is smooth. The size should also fit your hand comfortably.

For the keyboard, opt for one that suits your needs and preferences best. If it is for work, a standard, mechanical or ergonomic model is your best bet. If you need it for your gaming leisure, get a gaming keyboard.

Also, look out for the switches – take a mechanical keyboard, for example. Broadly speaking, there are three main types: linear (Red), tactile (Brown), and clicky (Blue). These are often labelled in colours for easy naming.

Finally, it is important to consider your budget. While there are plenty of high-end options, you do not necessarily need to spend a lot. Look for a set that offers the features and performance you need at a price point that works for you.
