Sunsine Plus Product Brief

As will be shown below, they are not to be confused with the older inverters with a built in charger. These older style units simply switch over from inverter mode to charger mode when generator power is available, completely disabling the inverter while charging.
Often these units include a changeover relay to transfer the power from the inverter to the generator and back again. A momentary loss of power occurs during this changeover, which will cause computers to reboot and may even damage some appliances. These problems are all overcome with an interactive inverter.

Sineware Inverters
In the past, simple modified square wave inverters provided more than adequate capabilities to operate household appliances. However, it is now recognised that sine wave inverters are becoming essential to operate modern appliances, and these have been available since 1991, when Siemens Ltd. released the world's first sine wave inverter, using their patented Sunsine technology.

The new release is an inverter/charger like no other! In fact the inverter and charger are not separate but one and the same intelligent device which can behave as either an inverter or a charger and instantly change from one to the other as required. It is called the Sunsine® Plus inverter/charger.

What will a Sunsine® Plus do for you? Well the best way to illustrate is by giving some examples. A typical installation only requires a generator, a Sunsine® Plus and a battery bank to make a complete system. Solar panels or wind generators may be included, but are not essential.

Generator Running
Let's say you have your generator running to charge your batteries (via the Sunsine® Plus). In most other systems, excess power from the generator not being used in charging the batteries will be fed into the house wiring and used to run appliances. This arrangement gives reasonably good generator usage. But if the generator is running at full load and a heavy item is switched on in the house, the generator will overload and may stall.

With a Sunsine® Plus system, the inverter would instantly recognise that the generator is overloaded and immediately cut back its charging to avoid overload of the generator. Ah - but what if the generator is still overloaded even with the charger completely cut back to zero? Well the Sunsine® Plus unit will also recognise this event and begin inverting and actually add its power to that of the generator! This is truly unique since you normally must never connect a generator and an inverter to the same circuit! (Don't try to prove this with your current inverter is you don't want big repair bills.)

The result is you can draw more power from the system than the generator can give on its own, and with the full surge rating of the inverter added, you can draw very high power, all without regard to how the system is running. It all happens automatically and instantly. You don't have to worry about what is on - it just happens! When the heavy load is gone again, the charging resumes where it left off, your generator runs always at high load with the charger constantly adjusting itself to use only the generator power that is not being used elsewhere.
Generator Off
If the generator is not running and the Sunsine® Plus is overloaded, it will carry the heavy overload for a good while, but will set off a beeper to request you start a manual start generator, or will automatically start a self starting generator if available. Once the generator is running, the Sunsine® Plus will adjust itself to connect to it and transfer the load to the generator up to its capacity. If the generator takes all of the load and has some spare capacity, the inverter begins charging the batteries.

The Sunsine® Plus will now fully recharge the batteries and then either indicate that the generator may be turned off, or shut it down automatically.

Let Sunsine® Plus grow with your needs
Normally, when sizing a solar system for a house, it is necessary to tally all the items used and estimate how often the are used. This is essential so that a system can be designed which puts back what is taken out each day. Many people find this chore difficult, and when new appliances are added to the house, the calculations should be updated to allow for any extra power drain.

With Sunsine® Plus operating beside an automatic start generator, none of this is necessary. The Sunsine® Plus simply calls the generator to make up the day's use. If you add more appliances, the generator runs longer to make up the difference and only the difference. It never costs any more than necessary to run a normal modern house.

For added peace, the Sunsine® Plus is programmed to not wake you during the night by starting the generator, and can be set for preferred run time each day. You simply keep fuel in the tank and use power as you would on the grid.

Solar power can be added at any time to reduce generator running time, but even without solar, the generator runs the least possible time each day. And it runs with a reasonable load, so diesels don't glaze up, and fuel efficiency is best.

Sunsine® Plus is optionally remotely accessable via modem, so setup changes and problem diagnosis may be performed via a phone call.

Finally, many appliances present a problem to typical solar systems because they need power 24 hours per day (eg VCR, oven clock, TV standby, smoke alarms, bedside radios etc). Up to four solar panels extra might be required to cater for these items, which are becoming more prevalent every day - even FAX machines are now common! A Sunsine® Plus system would just add a few minutes to the generator run time and your appliances are happy!
